TikTok ads for ecommerce: how to start without wasting budget

The short answer

Start TikTok ads by fixing tracking, then test several short, native-style videos against one simple offer with a small daily budget. Keep the videos that earn purchases at a cost below your break-even, switch off the rest, and refresh creatives often. On TikTok the video does most of the work, so creative testing matters more than targeting.

Is TikTok worth trying for an online store?

It can be, when your product is easy to show in a few seconds and you can make or collect real video of it in use. It is a weaker fit when the product needs a long explanation or when you have no way to produce regular video.

Treat it as a test channel first. A small, controlled test tells you whether your product works there before you commit a large budget.

What should be in place before you spend anything?

Tracking comes first. Install the TikTok Pixel (and the Events API where you can), send the purchase event with its value, and check it in the Events Manager. Without that, the platform cannot learn and you cannot judge results.

Then work out your break-even numbers. Your gross margin gives your break-even ROAS (1 divided by margin) and the most you can pay for one order. Write both down before launch.

What kind of video works on TikTok?

Ads that look like the rest of the feed usually hold attention better than polished commercials. Open with the hook in the first moments, show the product being used, and say one clear thing.

  • A hook that names the problem or shows the result straight away
  • Real people, real use, simple filming, clear sound or captions
  • One offer and one call to action per video
  • Several different ideas, not several copies of one idea

How do you run a clean first test?

Keep it small and simple. Use one product and one offer, and run three to five different videos in the same ad group so they compete fairly.

  • Pick a daily budget you can afford to lose while learning
  • Give the test several days before judging, and avoid editing it mid-way
  • Judge on cost per purchase and ROAS against your break-even, not on views or likes
  • Switch off the weakest videos and make new ones in the style of the winners

How often should you change the creative?

Often. Video ads tire quickly, so plan a steady supply of new ideas rather than waiting for results to fall. A weekly rhythm of new hooks, built from what won before, is a sensible habit.

The same creative testing routine used for Meta ads applies here, and our Meta ads testing process is a good model for the weekly cycle.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on a TikTok ads test?

Choose an amount you can afford to lose while learning, large enough to buy a few orders per day. Work backwards from your target cost per order, as in our guide to Meta ads budgets, and scale in small steps.

Do I need a TikTok Pixel?

Yes. It lets TikTok learn who buys and lets you measure results. Send the purchase event with its value and check it in Events Manager before you spend.

Should I use influencers or my own videos?

Either can work. What matters is that the video looks natural, shows the product in use and gives a clear reason to buy. Test a few styles and keep what earns purchases.
