How to track conversions properly with Meta Pixel and GA4

The short answer

Install the Meta Pixel and the GA4 tag on every page, then send a clear event when something valuable happens: a purchase, a lead form, or a WhatsApp click. Mark those events as key events in GA4 and use the Lead or Purchase event in Meta. Finally, test with Meta Pixel Helper and GA4 Realtime so you trust the numbers.

Why does tracking come before ad spend?

Ad platforms learn from the events you send them. If purchases or leads are not tracked, the platform optimises for clicks instead of customers, and you cannot tell which ads work. Fix tracking first, then spend.

Which events should you track?

Track the actions that make you money, not every click.

  • Ecommerce: purchase, and ideally add to cart and checkout started
  • Lead generation: form submitted (GA4 name generate_lead, Meta name Lead)
  • WhatsApp and calls: a click on the WhatsApp or phone button (Meta name Contact)
  • Page views, which both tags send automatically

How do you set up the Meta Pixel?

Add the Pixel base code to every page, then fire the standard event (Lead, Purchase, Contact) when the action happens. Use standard event names, because Meta optimises best on them.

For stronger accuracy, also send events from the server (Conversions API), which helps when browsers block cookies or scripts.

How do you set up GA4?

Add the GA4 tag to every page using your measurement ID (it starts with G-). Send events with clear names. In GA4, go to Admin, then Events, and mark the important ones as key events so they count as conversions.

GA4 shows where visitors come from, which pages bring leads, and how paid traffic compares with organic traffic.

How do you check that it works?

  • Install the Meta Pixel Helper extension and confirm the Pixel loads and the event fires once
  • Open GA4 Realtime in one tab and visit the site in another, then trigger the event yourself
  • Use Meta Events Manager, Test events, to watch events arrive live
  • Turn off ad blockers while you test, because they block both tags

What about visitors in Europe and the UK?

Privacy rules in the UK and EU expect consent before analytics cookies are set. A simple cookie notice that switches Pixel and GA4 consent on only after the visitor accepts keeps you compliant, while visitors elsewhere are tracked normally.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both the Meta Pixel and GA4?

Yes, they do different jobs. The Pixel feeds Meta so its ads can optimise. GA4 gives you one neutral view of all traffic and conversions across channels.

Why do my Meta and GA4 numbers differ?

They use different attribution rules, cookies and time windows. Expect differences. Use each tool for what it does best and compare trends, not exact totals.

What is a key event in GA4?

A key event is an event you mark as important, such as generate_lead or purchase. GA4 then counts it as a conversion in its reports.
